Tips for How to Dress on your First Day at a New Job

Starting a new job can be intimidating – but you can make it less so.

They hired you. You could just wear whatever you feel like, right? Wrong!

That first day on the job is very important. Do a little research first. Does this company have a dress code? If so, read it! Did you meet a friendly face when you interviewed with them? Go back to that person and ask some questions. It feels better to fit in than stand out on that first day. A more conservative approach could be best. Wear darker, non-wrinkle colors in fabrics that breathe. Be sure to wear an antiperspirant or deodorant.

Bring color into your outfit with scarves, ties, or statement necklaces. But leave the noisy accessories at home! No need to upset your workmates on the first day.

Your new employer hopefully provided you with this information prior to your start date. If that didn’t happen, think back to your interview and try to recall what other’s were wearing when you were on site interviewing for your new position. You don’t want to show up on your first day in casual clothing when everyone else comes to work in a suit! In our experience as expert image consultants, it is better to be overdressed than under-dressed.

Attire Homework Before Your First Appearance at Work

If you aren’t exactly sure and don’t have a uniform, do some homework so you will feel better prepared. Your first impression with your boss and coworkers is critical and you don’t want to come across as unprofessional.

Feel comfortable enough to “just ask.” If there’s something you’re not sure about before your first day at work, pick up the phone and make a request for the needed information. If there’s a step in the job during a session in developing executive presence with Dawn Stebbing, stop the training and ask for more detail.
