An Attractive Way To Apply Makeup for Women Over 50

Simple make-up tips and tricks that let you feel like beauty expert as you plump and fresh your skin

Knowing how to apply makeup in both an attractive and age-appropriate manner is especially important as you age over 50, according to Dawn Stebbing, owner of Dawn Stebbing LLC. Using the right techniques can light up your face, create a youthful glow, and give you an appearance of being younger.

Q:  I just turned 58, and my makeup routine isn’t working anymore. I take 10 minutes in the morning to throw something on, but it’s become a chore and I’m not satisfied with the results. Any quick tips for the over-50 crew?

A:  The fact that it’s become a chore is significant. Makeup application isn’t meant to be a rote activity you mechanically submit to as you race out the door to live your life. It’s an artful way to subtly enhance your features and should be applied thoughtfully (if at all) at any age.

Q: How do I perk up by cheeks when they seem to be missing color?

A: Be your beautiful self. If you feel that you have lost some of the color in your cheeks, use makeup that complements your color tones and look natural. You can enhance that area ever so slightly and still make a nice difference. Use shades of plum or coral, which look good on almost every skin tone. Bronzers often tend to make skin seem older. Use a foam pad with a cream blush and press blush along the cheekbone in an upward motion and on the apples of the cheeks.

Q: How do I lessen the lines and wrinkles on my face

A: Skin-softening moisturizer that contains an emollient works wonders. It helps to reduce wrinkles that have started to persist. Massage extra moisture into your skin each night before bed to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You can wake up refreshed and ready to look attractive during your day at work.

Q: I get dry, chapped lips as soon as the weather starts getting colder?  I’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work…in fact whatever I try seems to makes it worse?

A:  I have a solution that may work for you.  At night before going to bed it is highly recommended to wash your make-up off and put a night cream on.  Night cream repairs the skin as you sleep and it is very moisturizing to the skin.  When I thought about that statement, it made sense to use the night cream on my dry lips.  It repairs my lips as I sleep and when I wake they are so much smoother and softer.  So try it, and let me know if it works for you.
